With nearly 46,000 fans expected at Camden Yards this weekend for the Orioles' series against the Philadelphia Phillies, those planning to attend should prepare for potential crowding on public transit.
Standard two-car light rail trains can only accommodate around 500 passengers, and reports have surfaced this season of overcrowding, with fans standing in stairwells and trains unable to stop at certain stations due to the influx of attendees after games.
While the increased attendance reflects the Orioles' successful season, it poses a challenge for the aging light rail system, which recently underwent significant rehabilitation. The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) has confirmed that all 52 light rail vehicles are operational, barring a few in maintenance.
To accommodate the expected surge of fans, the MTA has historically increased the number of trains during peak post-game hours. However, they must also maintain regular service for commuters, which limits the number of available vehicles.
Transit Alternatives
For those concerned about the light rail crowding, several alternative transit options are available:
- Express buses will operate between Camden Station and the Timonium light rail stop, as well as between Camden Station and Glen Burnie/Cromwell, for up to an hour after the games conclude.
- The metro system, which runs from downtown to Owings Mills, offers free parking at stations between Owings Mills and Mondawmin. Camden Yards is a 15 to 20-minute walk from the Charles Center metro stop.
- If you typically park at the Lutherville light rail stop, consider driving to the Old Court Station to access the metro line.
- QuickLink 40 provides limited-stop service from various points in the city to the Fayette Street/Eutaw Street stop, just a short walk from the ballpark. Note that this service ends around 6 p.m.
- For post-game travel, CityLink Blue and Orange buses can be used, both of which stop at the West Baltimore MARC station, which has ample parking.
Fans are encouraged to download the mobile Transit app to assist in planning their trips and navigating the best routes.
