Anne Arundel County School Board Approves Historic $73.4 Million Budget Increase

The Anne Arundel County School Board has made a historic decision by adopting the 2027 budget, which marks the largest allocation in the county's history. This budget includes a substantial increase of $73.4 million in funding from the county council.

In addition to the approved budget, the school system will receive an extra $6.2 million in capital funding from the county. This additional funding is earmarked for various projects, including renovations to the team room and greenhouse at Southern High School, as well as the construction of a field house for Arundel High School.

Board President Gloria Dent expressed her enthusiasm regarding the budget, highlighting the commitment it represents towards students, schools, and educators in the county. She acknowledged the county executive and council for their support in approving both the budget and the supplemental funding.

Furthermore, the budget includes provisions for temporary support assistants (TSAs), who will see their pay increase from $16 to $18 per hour. Dent emphasized the crucial role TSAs play in supporting teachers and ensuring student success in the classroom.

Beyond the financial figures, Dent noted that this budget signifies a dedication to maintaining a high-quality educational system for all students in Anne Arundel County. She reflected on the academic achievements of students in 2026, attributing their success to sustainable budgeting over the past few years.

The new fiscal year will commence on July 1, marking the beginning of this landmark budget's implementation.
