Anne Arundel Fire Department Promotes Water Safety for Fourth of July

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — With the Fourth of July holiday weekend approaching, the Anne Arundel County Fire Department is ramping up its presence on the water to ensure safety for all. Fire boats will be stationed throughout the bay to respond to various emergencies, including boating accidents, medical emergencies, and potential house fires along the shoreline.

Lieutenant Matthew Marsiglia from the Office of Professional Standards highlighted the capabilities of the department's newest vessel, the Klasy-Lady, a 50-foot fire and rescue boat. This vessel, operated by the crew from Station 19 in Cape Saint Claire, is part of the county's efforts to maintain safety on the water during this busy holiday.

As part of their safety campaign, the fire department is urging boaters to take necessary precautions before heading out. "Weather conditions can change rapidly, so it’s crucial to check forecasts and plan accordingly," Marsiglia advised. He emphasized the importance of being prepared and aware of one’s surroundings while on the water.

In addition to boating safety, the department reminds all individuals entering the water, regardless of their swimming ability, to remain vigilant. Emergencies can arise unexpectedly, and preparedness is key.

With many people flocking to the bay for fireworks displays, Marsiglia noted that while the water provides excellent views, it is essential to maintain situational awareness. He encouraged boaters to keep a safe distance from other vessels and to follow all regulations set by event organizers.

For those planning to enjoy the fireworks from their boats, Marsiglia advised ensuring all required safety equipment is on board, including functional safety lights and a life raft, and to remain alert to other boaters in the vicinity.

The Anne Arundel County Fire Department is committed to ensuring a safe and enjoyable holiday for everyone on the water this Fourth of July.
