BALTIMORE — Staff members of the Baltimore City Public School System (BCPSS) are rejoicing following the unanimous ratification of a new contract that promises enhanced pay and working conditions.
Represented by Local 44 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), over 1,000 employees, including bus drivers, custodians, and food service workers, will benefit from the new agreement, which was finalized after negotiations that began in the spring.
The contract, effective retroactively from July 1, 2024, and extending through June 30, 2027, includes significant pay increases, improvements in health and safety measures, and expanded workplace rights for employees.
Everett Johnson, a prevention maintenance technician, expressed relief that the new contract eliminates the need for employees to purchase their own tools for work. He emphasized the importance of having the proper equipment and conditions to ensure safety in school buildings.
Custodian Teresa Fleming, who participated in the negotiations, highlighted the fair pay raises that will reduce the necessity for many staff members to hold second jobs, allowing them to focus more on their primary responsibilities.
Resource Specialist Pamela Hart commended the bargaining team for prioritizing worker needs, particularly in light of rising living costs. She noted that the wage increases would significantly assist families within the school community.
Hall Monitor Robert Cannon also shared his enthusiasm for the contract, stating that it recognizes the hard work of those behind the scenes who contribute to the functioning of the BCPSS.
