As the primary election approaches, the race for Baltimore County Executive is becoming increasingly contentious. Councilman Izzy Patoka has come under fire for a campaign mailer that features images of 24 Democratic candidates vying for various positions within the county.
The mailer highlights Patoka's efforts to expand the County Council from seven to nine seats, and he claims the use of fellow candidates' images is intended to showcase the diversity of those running. However, Councilman Julian Jones, who is also a candidate in the executive race, has criticized Patoka's actions.
In his own advertisement, Jones expressed his disapproval, stating that individuals have the right to object when their likeness is used without consent. He emphasized that the public should have a voice regarding how their images are utilized, regardless of legal stipulations.
Both candidates held press conferences on the same day to address the controversy. Patoka defended his mailer, asserting that the images were taken in public settings and are part of the public domain. He argued that those seeking elected office should be prepared for their images to be shared publicly.
Jones countered that the Democratic candidates in Baltimore County were not properly represented during the vote to expand the council and felt compelled to advocate for those affected by the decision.
Patoka and Jones are among five candidates competing for the County Executive position, which also includes Pat Young, Nick Stewart, and Mansoor Shams. The primary election is scheduled for June 23rd.
