Baltimore is taking significant steps to regulate smoke shops within the city. Mayor Brandon Scott has officially signed a new bill that introduces stricter zoning requirements for these establishments.
The legislation prohibits the opening of new smoke shops within a 750-foot radius of schools, parks, recreation centers, and existing smoke shops. This move aims to address public health concerns and curb illegal sales practices.
Earlier this month, the Baltimore City Sheriff's Office conducted a significant operation that resulted in the seizure of over 73 pounds of illegal cannabis and thousands of untaxed tobacco products from various locations across the city.
Council President Zeke Cohen emphasized the city's commitment to supporting legitimate businesses while taking a firm stance against those that endanger community health. “If you want to come here, start a restaurant, or start a grocery store, we welcome you with open arms,” Cohen stated. “What we do not want is folks who are selling poison to our children and to our communities.”
Residents have raised concerns about some smoke shops selling contaminated products, including items laced with drugs that have led to hospitalizations.
