Baltimore Light Rail Service Restarts Following Inspection Suspension

Baltimore's light rail service is back in operation as of Saturday, following a temporary halt that began on December 8 for emergency inspections of the fleet.

The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) initially suspended the service due to concerns identified during routine checks. Following an expedited inspection and correction process, the MTA has confirmed that the service can safely resume.

Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul J. Wiedefeld expressed gratitude towards MTA staff and contractors for their efforts in prioritizing safety during the review process. He acknowledged the inconvenience caused to riders during the suspension and thanked them for their understanding.

With the resumption of light rail service, the shuttle buses that had been operating between stations during the suspension will no longer be in service.

To welcome back riders, the MTA is offering free light rail rides until January 2, 2024. MTA Administrator Holly Arnold stated that safety remains the agency's top priority and expressed appreciation for the patience shown by the riding public during the necessary inspections and repairs.

Additionally, the MTA has applied for a federal grant of $225 million aimed at enhancing light rail services and acquiring a new fleet of modern vehicles.
