Baltimore Police have named the officer involved in a shooting incident that occurred last week in the Upton area, where a 35-year-old man was shot during a confrontation with law enforcement.
Officer Devon Gubbar, who has served with the Baltimore Police Department for four years, discharged his weapon during a struggle with Tavon Newton. According to a police statement released on Monday, the shooting took place following a disturbance reported at the intersection of Wilson and Brunt streets on Thursday, April 2, around 12:16 p.m.
Police Commissioner Richard Worley stated that officers arrived to find at least three individuals engaged in a physical altercation. During the incident, Newton fled the scene, prompting a foot pursuit by the officers.
As officers attempted to apprehend him in the parking lot of the Avenue Market, a physical altercation ensued. One officer deployed a Taser, which Newton managed to take from the officer. It was at this moment that Officer Gubbar fired a single shot at Newton.
Newton was subsequently transported to a local hospital, where he is currently reported to be in stable condition. Authorities recovered a knife and a gun from a satchel that Newton was carrying at the time of the incident.
Newton's sister has publicly stated that her brother posed no threat to the police during the struggle, as he was on the ground when the shot was fired.
The incident resulted in a significant police presence, with over a dozen vehicles responding to the scene, leading to the closure of a portion of Pennsylvania Avenue.
As of this year, Baltimore Police have been involved in five shooting incidents, three of which were fatal. The department's Special Investigations Response Team, along with the state’s attorney’s office, is currently investigating this latest incident.
