Bethesda Man Detained After Touching Peeling Paint at Trump’s Reflecting Pool

WASHINGTON — A Bethesda man reported that he was detained for five hours after touching peeling paint at the Reflecting Pool, a site recently renovated under directives from former President Donald Trump.

David Hearn, a 67-year-old former Olympic canoe racer, was biking 64 miles when he stopped at the pool out of scientific curiosity. He sought to inspect the new coating, which has reportedly begun to deteriorate. Hearn claimed he briefly touched the paint before a park employee instructed him to stop.

Following this interaction, Hearn stated that he was detained by National Guard troops and Park Police. In a telephone interview, he expressed his interest in the texture of the coating, describing it as “very rubbery.”

The incident comes amid claims from Trump about ongoing vandalism at the Reflecting Pool, which he has asserted has been intentionally damaged. Trump made these allegations on his social media platform, citing previous incidents of vandalism, including damage to the grass surrounding the pool.

Despite Trump's claims, Hearn's experience has raised concerns regarding the overall condition of the pool, which has faced issues like algae blooms and loose paint. The pool, which was renovated for the upcoming America 250 celebrations at a cost of over $14 million, has struggled to maintain its intended appearance.

Authorities responsible for the maintenance of the National Mall, including the U.S. Park Police and the National Park Service, have not commented on the allegations or the detainment of Hearn. He is scheduled to appear in court next month and is seeking legal assistance.

The controversy surrounding the Reflecting Pool has intensified, especially following the discovery of discolored grass on the National Mall that some believe may be linked to threats against Trump.
