BGE Customers in Baltimore Area Still Without Power Days After July 4th Storm

Many Baltimore-area residents are still grappling with power outages following severe storms that swept through the region over the Fourth of July weekend. As of Tuesday morning, approximately 4,000 customers had been without electricity since July 4, while another 3,000 were affected since July 5, according to Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE).

Diamond Wilkes, a resident of Harford County, expressed concern for her 3-year-old son, who has epilepsy and is sensitive to heat. After waking up to no power on Sunday morning, she felt compelled to book a hotel room to ensure her son’s safety. “I can’t sit in the house without power,” she said, noting the financial strain this has caused.

Wilkes reached out to local churches for assistance, and one helped cover her hotel costs. Despite her efforts, she reported limited communication from BGE regarding the restoration of power, with the company’s app estimating a return by 11 p.m. Tuesday.

Michael Berkow, a resident of Essex County, described the ongoing outage as “pretty all-consuming.” He has spent money on dry ice to keep food from spoiling and had to stay in a hotel, which he cannot afford to repeat. Berkow criticized BGE for its lack of updates and transparency about the situation.

Helga Mills from Anne Arundel County reported that BGE had incorrectly marked her power as restored multiple times, despite her home remaining without electricity. Mills has health concerns and is worried about the stress of the situation. She has lost perishable food and is relying on an old generator to maintain some power, which incurs additional costs.

As BGE crews work to address the widespread outages, residents continue to voice their frustration over the lack of communication and support during this challenging time.
