A boat explosion occurred on Saturday afternoon in Chesapeake City, injuring at least ten people, according to local authorities.
The incident took place around 4 p.m. at Schaefer’s Canal House, a restaurant situated along the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal. Officials identified the vessel involved as a 1988 Wellcraft cruise measuring 32 feet.
Reports indicate that the explosion happened shortly after the boat had refueled at the marina associated with the restaurant.
Among the injured, four individuals sustained serious burns and were subsequently transported by helicopter to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center for urgent care. Five additional people were taken to local hospitals via emergency services, while one more was assessed for injuries at the scene.
The investigation into the explosion is being conducted by the Maryland Natural Resources Police in conjunction with the Office of the State Fire Marshal.
This incident follows another boating accident the previous day, where two adults and two children were hospitalized after their boat caught fire in the Patapsco River. Fortunately, all four were reported to be in stable condition.
