Transitioning from college to the workforce can be a challenging endeavor, but Boise State University's Career Services is dedicated to easing that journey for its students. The office offers a range of resources, including assistance with job applications, résumé tailoring, and interview preparation.
One such success story is that of Chris Hughes, a recent graduate from the School of Nursing. Hughes had a clear goal in mind when he began his job search: to apply to hospitals that offered certified registered nurse anesthetist programs.
Despite the lengthy application process, Hughes remained determined and proactive. He credits his network of friends and mentors for their encouragement and support, particularly noting that a friend's application to Johns Hopkins Hospital inspired him to apply as well.
Hughes sought guidance from several individuals during his job search. Sarah Wilson, director of the academic integrity program in the Office of the Dean of Students, provided mentorship, while Emily Davies, an employer engagement specialist and School of Nursing liaison in Career Services, reviewed his résumé and offered interview tips.
“Chris was very self-motivated, and I was there to support him through the job search process,” Davies remarked. She provided him with resources related to intensive care unit new graduate programs and connected him with recruiters to gather more information.
Hughes' efforts paid off when he began his career at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore shortly after graduating in May. He advises future graduates to apply early, refine their résumés, and seek mentorship.
Career Services encourages nursing students to engage with their resources as early as possible. Davies emphasized that it’s never too soon to connect with the office for assistance. They can help students navigate the job market by connecting them with recruiters and providing industry-specific information.
In addition to résumé support, Career Services offers tailored interview preparation, including mock interviews that focus on the unique demands of the nursing field. Davies will be available for in-person discussions at the upcoming Meet the Employers job fair, co-hosted by the School of Nursing and the Student Nurse Association, on September 20, which is open to all health sciences students.
