POCOMOKE CITY, Md. — The community of Pocomoke City is in mourning after a tragic incident on Sunday, where the search for a missing four-year-old girl concluded with the heartbreaking news of her death.
Authorities reported that the child had been missing in the vicinity of Clarke Avenue and Laurel Street. Despite the efforts of law enforcement and medical personnel to revive her, the girl did not survive.
Pocomoke City Police Chief Arthur Hancock expressed the community's sorrow, stating, "There are simply no words that can ease the pain of a loss like this. On behalf of the City of Pocomoke City, I extend my deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the child’s family and loved ones." He urged the community to keep the family in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
The search operation began shortly before 11 a.m. on Sunday, with the Worcester County Sheriff's Office and Maryland State Police joining in the efforts to locate the child.
As the investigation continues, Chief Hancock has requested that residents refrain from speculation regarding the incident, emphasizing the importance of respecting the family's privacy. "The greatest gift we can offer this family right now is our prayers, our love, and our respect for their privacy," he added.
The Worcester County Sheriff's Office is currently leading the investigation and has not released any additional details.
In response to this tragic event, a vigil is scheduled for 7 p.m. Sunday at Cypress Park, aimed at supporting the child’s family, first responders, and the entire community.
