In response to a tragic hit-and-run incident that resulted in the death of a Silver Spring resident, local and state transportation officials are set to host a community meeting focused on road safety along Colesville Road.
The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and will take place at Burnt Mills Elementary School in Silver Spring. Residents can also participate virtually via Zoom.
Organized by Delegate Lorig Charkoudian and Montgomery County Council member Kristin Mink, the session aims to engage residents in discussions regarding the safety of the roadway, which traverses the eastern parts of Montgomery County.
Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from transportation officials and pose questions regarding various safety measures, including traffic signals, signage, crosswalks, and the potential implementation of speed cameras and other automated enforcement strategies.
The meeting comes three weeks after the tragic death of 61-year-old Hanna Wegayehou, who was struck and killed on June 19 while crossing Crestmoor Drive at Colesville Road. Authorities believe she was hit by a black SUV, possibly a 2009-2014 Lexus RSX 350, but no suspects have yet been identified.
