A driver tragically lost his life while in police custody in Greenbelt after being involved in a crash near the Baltimore-Washington Parkway on Wednesday night.
The incident occurred around 10 p.m. when the United States Park Police (USPP) observed a vehicle veering off the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and crashing into a wooded area along Southway. The USPP requested assistance from the Greenbelt Police Department (GPD) as they approached the scene.
Upon arrival, GPD officers found that the USPP had already handcuffed the driver and was escorting him from the wooded area to the roadway. However, during this process, the driver became unresponsive.
Emergency medical services were called to the location, and officers provided assistance until personnel from the Prince George's County Fire & EMS Department arrived. The driver was subsequently transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Authorities confirmed that a baby was present in the vehicle at the time of the accident but reported that the child was unharmed.
The Maryland Office of the Attorney General's Independent Investigations Division (IID) is currently looking into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Anyone with information is encouraged to reach out to the IID at (410) 576-7070 or via email at [email protected].
