Heather Culp Appointed Chief Philanthropy Officer for UMSOM and UMMC

The University of Maryland School of Medicine and Medical Center have appointed Heather S. Culp as the new Chief Philanthropy Officer.

The University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) and the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) have announced the appointment of Heather S. Culp, JD, as the new Senior Vice President and Chief Philanthropy Officer for both institutions.

Culp brings over 15 years of experience in fundraising and philanthropy, previously serving as the Executive Director of Development for The Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine. In that role, she oversaw fundraising initiatives for the Department of Neurology and Brain Sciences.

Bert W. O'Malley, MD, President and CEO of UMMC, expressed confidence in Culp's capabilities, stating, "Her proven ability to lead impactful campaigns and cultivate donor relationships across all levels of giving makes her the right person for this vital role." He emphasized the importance of philanthropy in advancing the mission of the institutions.

In her new position, Culp will guide the fundraising strategies for UMMC’s Downtown and Midtown campuses, UMSOM, and the University of Maryland Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute. Her focus will be on enhancing patient-centered care and fostering discovery in medical research throughout Baltimore and beyond.

Mark T. Gladwin, MD, Vice President for Medical Affairs at the University of Maryland, highlighted Culp's extensive background in academic medicine and her ability to unify the strengths of both institutions to attract resources for future advancements.

As part of her responsibilities, Culp will strengthen the collaboration between UMMC and UMSOM’s advancement teams, ensuring effective communication and impactful philanthropic opportunities that support education, research, and patient care.

Culp, a Maryland native, expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to join the institutions at a significant time, emphasizing her commitment to enhancing healthcare and medical education in the region.

Before her tenure at Johns Hopkins, Culp held various fundraising positions at the University of Maryland Carey School of Law and Washington College. She also practiced law in commercial litigation and estate planning. Culp holds a juris doctorate from the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law and a bachelor's degree from Washington College.
