A recent ICE operation at a Baltimore school during morning drop-off has raised safety concerns among parents and officials.

ICE Arrest at Baltimore School Sparks Outcry and Concerns

In a distressing incident on Thursday morning, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents conducted an arrest in the parking lot of Commodore John Rodgers Elementary/Middle School, which left young students shaken and prompted a wave of backlash from parents and local officials.

The situation unfolded around 8 a.m. when Jesus Acevedo-Sanchez, an undocumented immigrant, drove into the school parking lot with his family. According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Acevedo-Sanchez resisted arrest and attempted to evade agents, resulting in a confrontation where an ICE officer was reportedly dragged by his vehicle.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene as agents pulled Acevedo-Sanchez from the car while two children were taken from the back seat. Video footage shared by a local transportation driver shows the man being restrained on the ground, while a woman, also in the vehicle, was led away in handcuffs.

Maryland state Senator Bill Ferguson expressed outrage over the incident, calling it “truly unconscionable.” Baltimore City Public Schools spokesperson Sherry Christian noted that staff acted quickly to ensure the safety of students during the unfolding events.

ICE officials later expressed regret for the timing and location of the operation, stating that they do not target schools but must act against individuals who pose a threat. However, school officials are demanding more clarity regarding the incident, emphasizing that they were not informed about the operation beforehand.

“We have questions about ICE’s characterization of events,” Christian stated, highlighting that coordination with school officials did not occur during the incident.

Following the arrest, the children involved were placed in the custody of a relative, while Acevedo-Sanchez faces federal charges for resisting arrest and damaging government property. The woman detained with him is also facing charges for allegedly assaulting a federal officer.

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott and Governor Wes Moore have both expressed their discontent regarding the enforcement action taking place on school property, reiterating that schools should remain safe havens for children and families.

Principal Marc Martin conveyed his disappointment in a letter to the school community, seeking assurances that similar incidents would not happen again. The governor echoed this sentiment, stressing that schools must be environments where learning can occur without fear of federal enforcement actions.
