Environmental authorities are currently investigating reports of oil on the surface of Baltimore's Inner Harbor, which has raised concerns among local advocates.
Leanna Frick, a spokesperson for Blue Water Baltimore, a nonprofit focused on water quality, confirmed that oil has been observed in at least three distinct areas of the harbor.
Officials from both the Maryland Department of the Environment and the U.S. Coast Guard are involved in assessing the situation. As of now, the extent of the oil's spread and its potential impact on the harbor remain unclear.
This incident comes as Baltimore prepares to welcome a large influx of visitors for the Sail250 event, featuring tall ships from around the globe. The harbor is expected to attract around half a million attendees over the weekend.
It is still uncertain whether the oil presence is connected to any activities related to Sail250.
Last year, a significant oil spill occurred when approximately 5,000 gallons of fuel leaked from Johns Hopkins Hospital, flowing through storm drains and affecting the harbor. At that time, the hospital committed to covering the cleanup costs.
