BALTIMORE, MD — A 63-year-old man from Baltimore has been sentenced to 70 years in prison following his conviction for the murder of a fellow passenger on an MTA bus.
James Richburg was found guilty of second-degree murder, along with charges of using a firearm during a violent crime and illegal possession of a firearm. The incident took place on November 30, 2024, when Richburg fatally shot 32-year-old William Womack.
The confrontation began around 1 p.m. as the bus was stopped at the intersection of Eutaw and Redwood streets. Reports indicate that Womack dropped a Gatorade bottle near Richburg, which escalated into a verbal altercation. As Womack attempted to exit the bus, Richburg allegedly shouted, "I won't let you live," prompting Womack to reboard the bus to confront him.
Prosecutors stated that Richburg then repeated his threat, drew a handgun from his waistband, and shot Womack once in the chest at close range.
Following the shooting, both men exited the bus. Womack was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Authorities utilized surveillance footage from the bus and transit records to identify Richburg as the suspect. Investigators reviewed MTA video that showed Richburg using a transit pass on prior days, which matched his description.
Baltimore City State's Attorney Ivan J. Bates commented that the sentence guarantees Richburg will spend the remainder of his life incarcerated for what he described as a senseless act of violence on public transportation.
