The Maryland Department of Health confirmed a new case of measles on Saturday, following the return of a resident from an international trip earlier this week.
Officials have issued a warning for individuals who were at Dulles International Airport on Wednesday between 6 a.m. and 11 a.m., particularly in concourse C's international arrivals area, on transportation from the concourse, or in baggage claim. These individuals may have been exposed to the virus.
Additionally, anyone visiting the Mary’s Center Adams Morgan Clinic located at 2333 Ontario Rd. NW in Washington D.C. on Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. is also at risk of exposure.
This incident marks the latest measles case in Maryland this year, following at least three confirmed cases in the Baltimore area back in April, which raised health alerts across the city.
Measles is known to be highly contagious, spreading through the air or via contaminated surfaces. Symptoms typically include a high fever, runny nose, cough, watery eyes, and a red rash that can develop on the face and spread over the body days after initial symptoms appear.
Health officials are actively working to identify individuals who may have come into contact with the infected person and are notifying them about potential exposure.
Those who believe they may have been exposed are advised to check their vaccination status. The health department recommends that anyone who has not received two doses of the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine should contact their healthcare provider or the health department and isolate themselves if necessary.
