Mayor Scott Defends Luxury Vehicle Amid Accusations of Racism

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott has come under fire for his use of taxpayer funds to finance a luxury vehicle, leading to a contentious exchange with a reporter during a recent press conference.

The mayor, who has held office since 2020, is addressing backlash following a report from Fox Baltimore indicating that his primary vehicle, a 2025 Jeep Grand Wagoneer, is the most expensive government vehicle assigned to any mayor, governor, or county executive in Maryland. The vehicle's total cost to taxpayers is reported at $163,495, nearly double that of the next most expensive government vehicle in the state.

In response to inquiries about the vehicle's cost, Scott pointed to the price of former President Donald Trump’s armored vehicle, asserting that inflation was not being considered in the discussion and suggesting that political motivations were influencing the criticism he faced.

During the exchange, Scott labeled the reporter's question as “idiotic” and accused the media outlet of engaging in a “right-wing” effort to undermine his administration. He stated, “Just because you didn’t get the answer that you wanted in your racist slant, that’s one thing.”

The mayor's comments have sparked significant social media reactions, particularly from conservative critics who have accused him of deflecting accountability by invoking accusations of racism. Maryland Republican Delegate Kathy Szeliga commented on social media, stating that Scott's response was a classic deflection from the issue at hand.

Scott's office defended the vehicle’s cost, explaining that the reported figure includes necessary safety modifications required for the vehicle, which is utilized by the Baltimore Police Department’s Executive Protection Unit. The spokesperson emphasized that the vehicle was procured through standard procedures and that the city budgets for a new mayoral vehicle every four years due to the high mileage accumulated during official duties.

Despite the controversy, Scott continues to position himself as a reformer in Baltimore politics, criticizing previous leadership for prioritizing image over substance.
