MDOT Issues Warning as Traffic Fatalities Surge in Maryland

As summer travel increases, the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) is raising alarms about road safety following a troubling spike in traffic fatalities. Between July 6 and July 12, the state recorded 10 traffic-related deaths, including incidents on I-70 in Frederick County and Route 32 in Columbia.

In total, 18 traffic fatalities have been reported in Maryland for the month of July alone, with the month not yet halfway through. This year's total stands at 207 traffic deaths, which marks a decrease from 245 fatalities at the same point last year, yet the numbers remain concerning.

In light of these incidents, MDOT is urging motorists to adopt safer driving practices to help reduce the number of accidents. The department has provided several guidelines for drivers to follow:

  • Adhere to posted speed limits and reduce speed in work zones.
  • Yield to vehicles with flashing lights or slow down if unable to change lanes safely.
  • Avoid distractions, including mobile phones and other activities that divert attention from driving.
  • Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Always wear seat belts, both in the front and back seats.
  • Share the road responsibly with pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists.
  • Practice patience and avoid aggressive driving.

MDOT's renewed emphasis on road safety comes as a critical reminder for all drivers to take responsibility and prioritize safety as summer travel continues.
