MTA Bus Driver Identified After Pikesville Crash Injures Dozens

The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) has identified the driver of a bus involved in a serious accident last week in Pikesville. Tavon Giles, who began working with the agency in September 2023, was critically injured in the incident.

Following the crash, which occurred on Reisterstown Road, Giles was transported to a local hospital. Reports indicate he suffered a broken neck but is expected to survive, according to a coworker who spoke with WJZ-TV.

On the evening of the incident, the bus reportedly veered into oncoming traffic, colliding with multiple vehicles, a utility pole, and a lamppost before crashing into a FedEx facility. Witnesses described a chaotic scene, with Baltimore County Fire Chief Joseph Dixon noting it resembled a 'war scene' and categorizing it as a mass casualty event.

Surveillance footage from the area captured the bus sideswiping an SUV, leading to a cascade of injuries. Local business owner Neha Gupta recounted the emotional aftermath, stating, 'Everybody started crying. I started crying. People were bleeding, and a couple of people were sitting on the floor of the bus.'

Residents expressed concern over the dangers of that section of Reisterstown Road, emphasizing the heavy traffic and potential hazards.

As of now, the cause of the crash is still under investigation, and no charges have been filed. Maryland Governor Wes Moore has stated that his administration is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with Baltimore County officials to offer necessary support.
