New CEO of Baltimore Schools Focuses on Community Engagement and Support

In his inaugural month as CEO of Baltimore City Public Schools (BCPS), Jermaine Dawson is taking proactive steps to engage with the community and reshape the district's approach to education.

Dawson, a seasoned educator, has begun his tenure by visiting summer school programs and community events, aiming to connect with parents and local organizations that support students. He has outlined a 100-day entry plan that emphasizes collaboration and support for schools across the city.

“Internally, we’ve got to change how we do business,” Dawson stated, emphasizing the need for a shift in the district's operations. He plans to mobilize over 680 central office staff to visit schools during the first days of the new academic year, reinforcing a commitment to support principals and staff directly.

“Schools are the unit of change, and we are in service to support them,” he added, highlighting the importance of action over rhetoric.

Addressing Community Concerns

Dawson recognizes the persistent challenges faced by Baltimore's public schools, including low test scores, attendance issues, and safety concerns. He aims to address these problems by fostering dialogue among various stakeholders, including higher education institutions and local businesses.

“I believe in getting people around the table,” he remarked, as he seeks to create partnerships that will enhance educational opportunities for students. He has already reached out to Coppin State University and the Greater Baltimore Committee to discuss pathways for students to access higher education and job training.

Coppin State President Dr. Anthony L. Jenkins expressed enthusiasm for continued collaboration, emphasizing the importance of supporting local students.

Enhancing School Choice

Dawson's vision includes making every neighborhood school an attractive option for families. Currently, many students opt to attend schools outside their designated zones, often leading to longer travel times.

“I want every school to be an outstanding choice,” he stated, aiming to instill confidence in all city schools. He believes that parents should feel assured about the quality of education available in their neighborhoods.

Community Engagement Meetings

Central to Dawson's strategy is a series of community meetings designed to gather input from families and residents. The first meeting is scheduled for July 28 at Forest Park High School, with additional sessions planned through the fall.

“My job is to make sure our parents still see City Schools as the district of choice,” he concluded, as he embarks on this journey to improve education in Baltimore.
