CARNEY, Md. — A recent tragedy has prompted local officials to take action towards improving pedestrian safety on Harford Road. In March, a 72-year-old man lost his life after being struck while crossing the busy road, leading to plans for a safety upgrade at the intersection of Harford Road and 5th Avenue.
The Maryland State Highway Administration is set to install a pedestrian hybrid beacon at this location. This new system will enable pedestrians to activate a traffic signal, compelling vehicles to stop for safe crossing. Currently, the only warning for drivers is a flashing light indicating the potential presence of pedestrians.
Councilman David Marks emphasized the importance of this upgrade, stating that it will significantly enhance safety for residents accessing key destinations in the area, such as the local library and commercial center.
Delegate Nick Allen, a local resident, expressed his support for the initiative. He noted that he and many others frequently use this crossing, highlighting that it serves as a vital route for pedestrians, including those walking dogs and runners.
Local leaders have collaborated with community members to advocate for these changes. Senator Carl Jackson remarked on the importance of constituents voicing their concerns, which in this case led to the push for the new pedestrian signal.
While a specific timeline for the installation has not been released, local officials are hopeful that the new safety measure will be in place within the next year.
