Odenton Man Reports Stolen Car After Allegedly Burglarizing Ellicott City Store

An alleged burglar found himself in a peculiar situation in Ellicott City when he called the police to report his car stolen, only to be linked to a nearby crime. Jalen Godard, 29, of Odenton, made the call at approximately 5:45 a.m. on June 25.

Responding Officer Buchanan observed blood on Godard's hands and glasses, raising suspicions. Just moments before, a Verizon store located across Baltimore National Pike (Route 40) had been broken into. Surveillance footage from the store showed a man resembling Godard ransacking the premises.

Investigators also found blood on the store window, consistent with where Godard had sustained an injury. Initially, Godard claimed he was at a nearby McDonald's when his vehicle was stolen but later admitted to leaving the keys behind.

Body camera footage from Officer Buchanan captured him remarking, "that's some karma right there," when he connected the dots between the burglary and Godard's call.

The Howard County Police Department took to social media to commend Buchanan's swift resolution of the case, humorously noting, "Don't you hate it when your car gets stolen while you're committing a burglary?"

Court records reveal that Godard has a prior history of burglary, having pleaded guilty to second-degree burglary in Baltimore County in January 2021, for which he received probation before judgment. Currently, he is being held without bail and is scheduled to appear in court on July 24.
