Officers Involved in Shooting After Confrontation with Armed Individual in Baltimore

BALTIMORE — Body-worn camera footage has been released by the Baltimore Police Department depicting an officer-involved shooting that occurred on January 19.

Officers responded to several 911 calls, which included requests for a welfare check, reports of a disorderly person, and indications of an armed individual. Upon arrival at an apartment complex, police found residents evacuated due to a fire alarm.

Inside the building, officers encountered a distressed individual brandishing a large knife. After identifying themselves, the suspect retreated into an apartment. Officers noted blood in the hallway and attempted to gain entry. Additional police units arrived on the scene to assist with de-escalation efforts, instructing the suspect to exit and drop the weapon.

The individual emerged from the apartment holding both the knife and an electric stun device, disregarding police commands. Officers deployed TASERs in an attempt to subdue the suspect, but the devices were ineffective. The situation escalated when the suspect charged at the officers with the weapons raised, prompting one officer to discharge his service weapon, striking the individual.

Despite sustaining gunshot wounds, the suspect continued to ignore commands to drop the weapons. After further de-escalation attempts, the individual ultimately complied and relinquished the weapons, allowing officers to take them into custody.

The suspect was subsequently transported to a hospital for treatment of the gunshot wounds and now faces charges related to assault and weapon possession. The Baltimore Police Department's Special Investigations Response Team is currently conducting an investigation into the incident.
