A bus accident in Pikesville, a suburb of Baltimore, occurred on Wednesday night, injuring at least 28 individuals. The Baltimore County Fire Department classified the incident as a mass casualty event.
The crash involved a Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) bus that collided with several vehicles before crashing into a building located at 500 West Franklin Street. Reports indicate that one person sustained critical injuries.
According to Jerimiah Moerke, a spokesperson for the MTA, the bus initially struck a Lexus and then a Nissan before coming to a halt against the building. Emergency responders worked diligently at the scene, where multiple police and fire units were deployed.
Kevin Cartwright, communications director for the Baltimore City Fire Department, noted that the incident's severity warranted escalation to a level one mass casualty event due to the number of individuals requiring medical attention. The bus driver was successfully extricated from the vehicle, which was lodged into the structure.
The Baltimore City Fire Department's special rescue operations team evaluated the four-story apartment building affected by the crash. Fortunately, they found that the building's support beams were intact, although the first floor was temporarily condemned.
Authorities are advising drivers to steer clear of the area as emergency personnel continue their operations. An investigation into the cause of the crash is currently underway, with MTA Police, the Baltimore City Fire Department, and building inspectors present at the scene.
