The Maryland attorney general's office has released the name of the man who was fatally shot by six officers from the Baltimore Police Department after a high-speed chase on Sunday morning.
Maurice Daniels, a 42-year-old resident of Millersville in Anne Arundel County, was first observed driving a vehicle linked to an armed carjacking by a police helicopter at approximately 1:25 a.m.
According to Police Chief Richard Worley, ground units quickly located the vehicle and initiated a pursuit that lasted around 20 minutes through the city.
The chase concluded when Daniels stopped his car on the 3300 block of Clifton Avenue at about 1:41 a.m. Officers approached the vehicle, but Daniels did not comply with their orders to exit and instead locked himself inside.
As an officer prepared to break the window, another officer noticed a weapon inside the car and alerted the others. Within moments, the officers discharged their firearms, resulting in Daniels' death.
Officers involved in the shooting include Sgt. Kevin Rivera and Officers Charles Blackman, David Weldon, Antonio Groomes, Darrius Hicklin, and Al-Shakier Drake. The weapon retrieved from the vehicle was identified as a BB gun.
The Independent Investigations Division of the attorney general's office is currently examining the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
