Montgomery County police officers fatally shot a man on Sunday evening after receiving reports of him loading a firearm at a bus stop near a busy strip mall in Gaithersburg.
The incident took place around 6:47 p.m. in the 9600 block of Lost Knife Road, in front of the Montgomery Village Plaza. Police were alerted by a caller who witnessed the man handling a gun at the bus stop.
Upon arriving at the scene, police attempted to deescalate the situation while also working to ensure the safety of the crowded parking lot. According to a police statement, the situation escalated, prompting officers to discharge their weapons.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene, where a handgun was recovered. Thankfully, no officers or bystanders were reported injured during the incident.
Authorities have not disclosed the number of officers involved in the shooting or the identity of the deceased man. However, Capt. Cody Fields, the director of media for Montgomery County Police, confirmed that multiple officers from both Montgomery County and Gaithersburg police departments were involved in discharging their firearms.
In accordance with state law, the investigation of the shooting has been handed over to the Maryland attorney general’s Independent Investigations Division. Investigators were present at the scene on Sunday night to gather evidence and interview witnesses.
This shooting marks the second incident involving police gunfire near the Montgomery Village Plaza this year. Earlier in March, officers wounded a suspect after he allegedly fired at them during a pursuit.
