Police-Involved Shooting Claims Life in Northwest Baltimore

BALTIMORE — A police-involved shooting in northwest Baltimore resulted in the death of a man early Sunday morning, prompting an investigation by the Maryland Attorney General's Independent Investigation Division (IID).

The incident occurred shortly before 1:45 a.m. near the Walbrook Junction Shopping Center, specifically in the vicinity of Denison Street and Clifton Avenue. Authorities reported that the shooting followed a pursuit of a vehicle that had been reported stolen during a carjacking in Baltimore County.

According to officials, Baltimore Police's helicopter, Foxtrot, identified the stolen vehicle around 1:30 a.m. Officers monitored the vehicle from a safe distance for approximately 20 minutes before it stopped in the 3300 block of Clifton Avenue.

As officers approached the vehicle, the driver initially opened the door but then quickly returned inside and locked the doors. When an officer prepared to break the window to remove the driver, another officer spotted what appeared to be a firearm inside the vehicle.

Following repeated commands for the driver to exit the vehicle, multiple officers discharged their weapons, striking the driver. Police rendered immediate medical assistance, and the man was transported to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

No officers were reported injured during the incident. Investigators later recovered a replica BB gun from the vehicle, which contributed to the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Homicide detectives were seen processing the scene Sunday morning, with evidence markers placed around the vehicle involved. High-ranking officials from the Baltimore Police Department were also present.

The IID announced the commencement of its investigation approximately two hours after the shooting took place. All officers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave while the investigation is ongoing. The identity of the deceased man has not yet been released.

Authorities are urging anyone with information, including potential video evidence, to contact the IID at 410-576-7070 or via email at [email protected].
