The Baltimore City Health Department confirmed on Tuesday that two foxes found in the Roland Park neighborhood have tested positive for rabies.
One of the foxes had direct contact with humans, while the other was not reported to have interacted with people. The first fox was located near the intersection of Overhill Road and Meadow Lane, while the second was found in the 4400 block of Linkwood Road, both areas adjacent to Stoney Run Park.
During follow-up interviews, officials identified another individual who may have been exposed to the rabid fox discovered on Linkwood Road.
Animal Control officials suspect there could be as many as five additional foxes in the vicinity, all possibly part of the same den. Health Department officers conducted a canvassing of the area on the evening of June 9 to assess the situation.
Dr. Michelle Taylor, health commissioner for the Baltimore City Health Department, emphasized the seriousness of rabies exposure in a press release. Residents living near Stoney Run Park are advised to monitor their pets for any signs of bites or unusual wounds and to seek veterinary care immediately if such injuries are found.
Pet owners are also urged to ensure their animals are current on rabies vaccinations, as untreated rabies can be fatal.
The Baltimore City Health Department has requested that anyone who has handled a fox in the Roland Park area reach out to them at 410-396-4436 during regular business hours, or contact the Baltimore City Operator at 410-396-3100 after hours and on weekends.
