Authorities are continuing their efforts to locate a swimmer who is believed to have drowned in the Potomac River near Great Falls, Maryland, following an incident on Sunday.
The search commenced around 6:15 p.m. near Billy Goat Trail A, within the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park, as confirmed by Pete Piringer, a spokesperson for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service.
According to reports, the individual was swimming with a group along the Maryland side of the river when he went missing while attempting to reach the Virginia side.
On Sunday, a comprehensive search operation was launched, involving dozens of personnel who combed both banks of the river utilizing watercraft, ground teams, and aerial support. The search efforts were temporarily halted on Sunday night but resumed early Monday morning.
The operation includes collaboration from fire departments in both Montgomery and Fairfax counties, the use of sonar technology, and aerial assistance from a helicopter operated by the U.S. Park Police.
