Baltimore police are actively searching for two suspects following a shooting incident that occurred at a playground in the Upton neighborhood on Wednesday evening.
Officers responded to the scene at the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and Dolphin Street around 7:40 p.m., where they discovered an 11-year-old boy and a 26-year-old man suffering from gunshot wounds. Both victims were swiftly transported to a local hospital, with the child reported to be in serious but stable condition, while the adult is in stable condition.
According to police, initial investigations suggest that the adult male was the intended target of the shooting, with the young boy being an innocent bystander. At the time of the incident, there were other children present at the playground.
Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley described the shooters as “cowards” who resorted to gun violence to settle their conflicts. He noted that one of the suspects was armed with a rifle and fired indiscriminately towards the playground.
“What we have here is another case of weak men who cannot resolve their petty conflict without gunfire,” Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott stated during a press conference. He emphasized the need for community cooperation in identifying the suspects, urging residents to report any information.
Worley also highlighted the possibility that the suspects may still be in the vicinity and encouraged local citizens to help bring them to justice. “To the citizens in the area, I almost guarantee you that these two individuals live right here, and you probably know who they are,” he said.
The police department is requesting anyone with information regarding the shooting to contact 911 or the anonymous tip line at 1-866-7LOCKUP.
