A 23-year-old woman from Silver Spring has pleaded guilty to charges stemming from a tragic car accident in August that claimed the life of an 85-year-old woman and left another person seriously injured.
Jesica Argueta entered her plea on Wednesday to one count of vehicular manslaughter due to gross negligence and one count of second-degree assault. The Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office announced the plea on Thursday, indicating that Argueta could face up to 20 years in prison when she is sentenced on September 16.
The incident occurred on August 7, when Argueta was driving a Toyota GR86 at speeds exceeding 80 mph in a 40 mph zone during the busy morning rush hour. Reports indicate that she was weaving through traffic when her vehicle collided with a Toyota 4Runner. Josephine Gieske, who was seated in the front passenger seat of the 4Runner, suffered critical injuries as a result of the crash. The driver of the 4Runner also sustained serious injuries.
At the time of the collision, Gieske and the driver were returning home from church, traveling east on Randolph Road. The 4Runner was attempting to make a left turn onto Sherwood Forest Drive in Colesville when the crash occurred. Gieske succumbed to her injuries on August 22.
As of Thursday afternoon, Argueta's attorney was not available for comment.
