Authorities in Essex, Maryland, are examining skeletal remains discovered in a wooded area, which they believe may be connected to a woman who has been missing from New Jersey.
The remains were found by a local resident in a remote section of the neighborhood. Upon discovery, the individual promptly notified law enforcement, prompting an investigation by the Baltimore County Police Department.
While the identity of the remains has not yet been confirmed, police are working on the assumption that they may belong to 35-year-old Caitlyn D. Smith, who was reported missing earlier this year in New Jersey.
Investigators are currently coordinating with New Jersey authorities to gather more information about Smith’s disappearance and to confirm the identity of the remains.
Police have not ruled out the possibility of foul play and are urging anyone with information related to the case to come forward.
