As the Baltimore Orioles gear up for their game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, the city is grappling with the effects of smoke from a nearby warehouse fire. The blaze, which originated at a cold storage facility in Boyle Heights, approximately four miles from Dodger Stadium, has prompted officials to declare a state of emergency in Los Angeles County.
Smoke filled the air as players and staff arrived at Dodger Stadium for the series finale. The fire, which started on Wednesday, has been described by the Los Angeles Fire Department as “very complex,” involving multiple hazards that have complicated firefighting efforts.
Firefighters have utilized helicopters for air drops to combat the flames, with reports indicating that foam within the facility continues to burn. Additionally, an ammonia line ruptured during the incident, raising concerns about potential toxic fumes and flammability.
Jamie Moore, the chief of the Los Angeles Fire Department, stated in a Saturday press conference that while the hazardous materials aspect of the fire has been addressed, challenges related to biohazards are ongoing. “We have 85 million pounds of frozen food inside of this facility and the way the building has been laid out, it’s very difficult for us to get in there because there’s zero visibility inside,” Moore explained. “Our firefighters are not able to just go in there and start moving pallets.”
Despite the challenging conditions, the Orioles and Dodgers game is set to proceed as scheduled, with fans hoping for clear skies as first pitch approaches.
