STEVENSVILLE, Md. — The community of Stevensville is in mourning following the unexpected death of 18-year-old Tyler Hendrix, a dedicated volunteer firefighter with the United Communities Volunteer Fire Department (UCVFD).
Hendrix passed away on Sunday, June 21, prompting an outpouring of grief from both his family and the wider community. The UCVFD shared their condolences via social media, stating, “The impact of his passing on his family, the membership of the department, and the community is significant and painful.”
Described as an “amazing young man” and a “hero,” Hendrix was actively involved in several local organizations, including the Maryland Interscholastic Cycling League (MICL). In a tribute, MICL expressed their sorrow, emphasizing their community spirit: “During this incredibly difficult time, our thoughts are with the Hendrix family, his friends, teammates, and the entire Kent Island community.”
On Tuesday, the UCVFD held a dignified transfer of Hendrix’s body, bringing him back from Baltimore to the Eastern Shore. They extended their gratitude to various agencies, including the Baltimore City Fire Department and Anne Arundel County Fire Department, for their support during this process.
A candlelight vigil to honor Tyler Hendrix is set to take place today, June 23, at 8:30 p.m. at the Kent Island High School stadium, providing an opportunity for the community to come together in remembrance.
