A shooting incident near MGM National Harbor on Thursday night resulted in the death of a 33-year-old man from Alexandria, Virginia. Authorities report that the incident, which is being investigated as a case of road rage, occurred around 11:10 p.m. at the intersection of MGM National and Monument avenues.
Christopher Austin Jr. was found inside his autocycle, a three-wheeled motorized vehicle, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene by responding officers.
According to Prince George’s County Police, the confrontation began when Tyrell Hairston, 36, who resides in Accokeek, engaged in an argument with Austin while both were waiting to exit the parking garage of the MGM National Harbor Hotel and Casino. The situation escalated when Hairston approached Austin’s vehicle and opened fire.
Following the shooting, Austin attempted to flee the scene but crashed his vehicle a short distance away. Hairston reportedly contacted the police soon after to surrender himself and is currently in custody at the county’s Department of Corrections.
Investigators have indicated that there is no evidence to suggest that Hairston and Austin were acquainted prior to this incident.
