THURMONT, Md. — A 13-year-old boy was airlifted to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore after suffering a bite from a beaver at Cunningham Falls State Park on Sunday.
The incident occurred in the William Houck Area of the park, prompting immediate action from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
In response to the attack, the DNR closed the beach area in an effort to locate the beaver involved. Officials reported that one beaver was captured and euthanized for rabies testing, although it remains uncertain whether this particular animal was responsible for the boy's injuries.
As crews conducted thorough searches of the area, no additional beavers were found. The beach at Cunningham Falls State Park continues to remain closed while investigations are ongoing.
The DNR's Wildlife and Heritage Service is collaborating with the Park Service and Natural Resources Police to assess the situation and determine when the beach can be reopened to the public. All other areas of the park are still accessible to visitors.
