Two firefighters from Howard County were hospitalized with minor injuries following a two-alarm fire in a townhouse in Ellicott City on Monday morning.
The incident began at approximately 6:40 a.m. when emergency dispatchers received reports of smoke near Vardon Lane and Resort Road. A subsequent call indicated a fire in the 2600 block of Legends Way, prompting authorities to escalate the response to a first-alarm structure fire.
Upon arrival, firefighters encountered significant flames erupting from the roof of a two-story townhouse, which had spread to an adjacent residence. As efforts to control the blaze intensified, a second alarm was activated, bringing in additional units from the Howard County Fire Department, as well as crews from Carroll and Baltimore counties.
During the firefighting operations, the roof of the first townhouse collapsed, although it was reported that the townhouse was unoccupied at the time. However, the fire did displace four adults and three children from the neighboring townhome.
The two injured firefighters were treated at a local hospital for injuries unrelated to the roof collapse. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the county fire marshal's office.
