Upton Rowhouse Fire Claims Life of 65-Year-Old Man

A tragic fire in a rowhouse in Upton led to the death of a 65-year-old man on Tuesday morning, marking the first fire-related fatality in Baltimore for 2023.

Baltimore firefighters responded to the emergency call shortly before 10 a.m. in the 700 block of Brune Street, where they encountered a significant blaze. Despite the dangerously cold temperatures, crews worked swiftly to extinguish the flames.

The victim was discovered on the first floor of the residence and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to John Marsh, a spokesperson for the Baltimore City Fire Department.

In a separate incident, a 33-year-old man managed to evacuate the building and was subsequently taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries sustained during the fire. Images shared by the Baltimore firefighters union depicted thick gray and black smoke as well as flames visible through the barred windows of the home.

This incident follows a severe winter storm over the weekend that brought 8 to 12 inches of snow and sleet to various regions of Maryland. Last year, Baltimore recorded nine fire-related fatalities, a decrease from 18 in 2021.
