Video Released of Officer-Involved Shooting in Baltimore

BALTIMORE — The Baltimore Police Department has released body-worn camera footage depicting a fatal confrontation between officers and a suspect on Belair Avenue.

Officers from the group violence unit approached Dwight Hawkins while he was inside a liquor store. As they attempted to engage him, Hawkins reportedly tried to exit the store and fled the scene.

The released video footage shows Hawkins holding a firearm just moments before officers discharged their weapons, firing a total of 17 rounds.

According to Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley, the officers acted appropriately in their efforts to remove firearms from the streets. He stated, “They’re trying to get guns off the street. Clearly, they were drawn to this individual who they were extremely correct. He had a handgun.”

The weapon in question was identified as a loaded nine-millimeter semi-automatic handgun.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding gun violence in the city. So far this year, police have reported making 181 gun arrests where individuals complied and surrendered their weapons without resistance.
