Duties
- Transit Operations: Operates City transit vehicles on assigned routes, safely picking up and discharging passengers at designated locations in strict accordance with established schedules.
- Safety & Compliance: Adheres to all federal, state, and local laws and safety guidelines, including posted speed limits and defensive driving practices.
- Specialized Routing: Serves as a relief driver or coordinates specialized routes designed for senior citizens and individuals with disabilities.
- Pre- & Post-Trip Inspections: Performs rigorous, mandatory pre-trip inspections prior to leaving the garage and post-trip inspections upon return to ensure vehicular safety.
- Revenue Collection: Collects and monitors passenger fares, tickets, or transfers to ensure proper transit compliance.
- Vehicle Maintenance & Reporting: Promptly identifies and reports vehicle defects or mechanical issues to maintenance technicians and supervisors.
- Administrative Records: Compiles accurate daily reports capturing total mileage, passengers transported, fuel/oil usage, and any unusual occurrences or delays.
- Incident Management: Reports any and all accidents, medical issues, or security incidents involving City vehicles or passengers immediately to the Police Department and transit supervisors.
- Vehicle Custody: Maintains the interior cleanliness and orderly condition of the assigned vehicle, including regular sweeping, dusting, and washing of the interior cabin.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Municipal Navigation: Basic knowledge of the principles of transit vehicle operations and a functional understanding of the street and road network within the City of Annapolis.
- Regulatory Compliance: Strong working knowledge of State of Maryland motor vehicle regulations, traffic laws, safety protocols, and transit-specific legal mandates.
- Public Relations: Exceptional driving courtesy and the ability to establish and maintain highly positive, professional relationships with diverse passenger populations.
- Operational Execution: Ability to comprehend and execute complex oral and written schedules, instructions, and route changes.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- Education: Graduation from a standard high school course or possession of an approved GED certificate.
- Experience: Minimum of two (2) years of professional experience driving a transit bus and providing general public or specialized transportation services. (An equivalent combination of experience and specialized training that provides the required skills may be considered).
- Licensure: Possession of a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) issued by the State of Maryland, complete with Passenger (P) and Air Brake endorsements.

- Safety-Sensitive Designation: This position requires mandatory consent to chemical substance screening consistent with federal, state, and city guidelines, including pre-employment, post-accident, and random drug and alcohol testing.
