Acts of Kindness Shine Through During the 2016 Ellicott City Flood

ELLICOTT CITY, Md. — In the face of devastation during the 2016 flood, the community of Ellicott City demonstrated remarkable compassion and bravery.

Among the heroes was Jason Barnes, the owner of All Time Toys, who became widely recognized for his role in forming a human chain to rescue a driver trapped in the floodwaters on Main Street.

Having witnessed his store succumb to the rising waters, Barnes felt compelled to act. "I didn't want to watch someone die on my shift," he stated, reflecting on the urgency of the situation. As he and others searched for safety, they heard cries for help and witnessed cars being swept away.

In a gripping moment captured on video, Barnes was himself swept into the torrent but managed to emerge with only minor injuries. He then joined forces with others to form a human chain, successfully pulling the stranded driver to safety.

This act of heroism became a lasting symbol of the resilience of Ellicott City, a theme that would resurface tragically in subsequent years.

Remembering Sgt. Eddison Hermond

In May 2018, the community faced another flood, and once again, a heroic act was witnessed. Staff Sergeant Eddison Hermond of the Maryland National Guard, though off duty, rushed into the rising waters to assist an elderly woman in distress.

Alicia Armstrong, Hermond's sister, recounted his selflessness, stating, "He could have just stayed inside, and been fine, but there was someone in need." Tragically, Hermond lost his life during the rescue attempt, making the ultimate sacrifice.

At his funeral, Armstrong honored her brother's heroism, presenting the American flag to their mother as part of the Honor Guard ceremony. "His actions were very heroic, very selfless," she said, emphasizing the values he lived by.
