The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Workers (AFSCME) Maryland Council 3, the largest union representing municipal workers in the state, has officially endorsed Brandon Scott for Baltimore City mayor and Zeke Cohen for council president.
Members of the union, which includes employees from transportation, public works, parks, recreation, and some city schools, gathered at their annex on Ostend Street to show their support for Scott, chanting for 'four more years.' AFSCME Maryland President Patrick Moran highlighted the importance of ethical leadership for the city's future and noted the candidates' commitment to unionization efforts at local cultural institutions, including the Walters Art Museum and the Enoch Pratt Library.
In January, the union made a $5,000 contribution to Scott's campaign, reflecting their support. Dorothy Bryant, President of Local 44 and a city employee for 55 years, criticized Scott's opponent, former Mayor Sheila Dixon, for past decisions that negatively impacted city services during her tenure.
Moran stated that the union conducted surveys and interviews with candidates to inform their endorsements. Cohen, who currently represents District One, expressed pride in his efforts to improve wages for contracted city sanitation workers, emphasizing the importance of treating all workers fairly.
Scott also addressed concerns regarding financial influences in the election, particularly referencing donations to Dixon's campaign from individuals associated with media outlets that have previously supported pro-Trump narratives. Despite Dixon currently leading in polls, Scott's campaign is gaining momentum.
In addition to Scott and Cohen, AFSCME has endorsed Comptroller Bill Henry and several candidates for the city council, with ongoing discussions about endorsements in other districts, including District One, which Cohen is vacating.
