Animal Control Seizes 369 Birds from Baltimore Pet Store

Animal control officers seized a total of 369 birds from Loros Exoticos, a pet store in Baltimore, following an investigation triggered by a complaint. The initial removal occurred on Friday when 47 birds were taken, but a subsequent visit on Wednesday resulted in the capture of an additional 322 birds.

Officials reported that many of the birds were living in unsanitary conditions and some were found to be ill. The Baltimore City Health Department has not confirmed whether the store has been closed, but the store has announced via Facebook that it will not be selling birds until further notice.

Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter (BARCS) responded to the situation, stating on social media that “hundreds of birds suddenly needed safety, medical care, and a fresh start.” The shelter reported that many of the birds arrived in poor health and required specialized medical attention.

Due to the large number of birds, BARCS faced significant challenges in accommodating them, prompting veterinarians from the Maryland Zoo and the National Aquarium to assist with treatment. The shelter had to repurpose areas typically used for other animals into temporary housing for the birds.

BARCS is collaborating with various rescue organizations to find homes for the birds, and a spokesperson confirmed that all of the birds have now been placed with rescues.
