An officer with the Annapolis Police Department fatally shot a dog described as aggressive on Saturday morning after responding to a report of dog bites.
The incident occurred around 8:30 a.m. on the unit block of Tiburon Court, where police were alerted to two individuals and their dogs being bitten.
Upon arrival, the officers encountered a group of people, one of whom was holding a dog that subsequently broke free and exhibited aggressive behavior. According to Bud Zapata, a spokesperson for the department, the dog charged at an officer who was positioned between the animal and nearby bystanders.
Although the report did not specify the dog's breed, the officer characterized it as a pit bull. The officer discharged their weapon, resulting in the dog's death.
Only one officer was involved in the shooting, and no administrative leave was issued following the incident. The body of the dog was taken into custody by Anne Arundel County Animal Services, and the owners were notified of the situation.
Zapata indicated that there is no ongoing police investigation regarding the shooting, although Animal Services may conduct its own inquiry. Attempts to reach Animal Services for comment were unsuccessful due to office closures.
In the aftermath of the incident, one of the individuals bitten by the dog sought medical treatment at a hospital, while the other declined care.
