Delegate Gary Simmons, a Democrat representing District 12B in Anne Arundel County, has been charged with second-degree assault, as confirmed by online court records.
The charge stems from an altercation with his 27-year-old stepdaughter that occurred last week at their home in Brooklyn. According to the charging documents, the stepdaughter reported the incident to the Police Department late Wednesday night, describing it as a "physical family dispute."
During the argument, Simmons allegedly became aggressive after his stepdaughter jokingly declined his request to move her vehicle. She claimed he began to put his hands in her face and, when she pushed his hands away, he tightly grabbed her left arm. The situation escalated until her brother intervened and separated the two.
Subsequent police reports indicate that the brother corroborated his sister's account of the incident. Although Simmons was not arrested at the time, a summons has been issued for him to appear in Glen Burnie District Court later this month, with a trial scheduled for September 11.
Simmons, who is 55 years old, has been serving in the Maryland House of Delegates since being elected in 2022. He is a member of the Judiciary Committee and was appointed deputy majority whip earlier this year. Additionally, he has held the position of vice chair of the Anne Arundel County House Delegation since 2025.
The charge against Simmons was first reported by the Maryland Daily Record. As of now, he has not publicly responded to requests for comment regarding the allegations.
