Archdiocese of Baltimore Hosts Fourth Annual Gun Buyback Event

The Archdiocese of Baltimore is set to hold its fourth annual gun buyback event on Saturday, August 8, in Southwest Baltimore. This initiative has successfully facilitated the removal of over 1,000 unwanted firearms from the community.

Taking place in the parking lot of the Westside Shopping Center at 2413 Frederick Ave. from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the event will allow gun owners to surrender their firearms safely and legally, with no questions asked. Participants will receive compensation ranging from $100 to $300 per weapon, depending on the type of firearm surrendered.

Since its inception, the buyback program has collected 1,056 firearms, including assault weapons and stolen guns. The initiative has garnered more than $220,000 in funding from Catholic parishes and individual donations, with any surplus funds directed towards supporting families affected by homicide.

Rev. Michael Murphy, pastor of Our Lady of Victory Parish and a founding member of Health by Southwest, emphasized the importance of removing guns from homes to prevent potential tragedies. He noted that such actions can save lives in precarious situations and reduce the risk of firearms being used in criminal activities.

Statistics from the Maryland health department indicate that in 2025, there were 610 gun-related deaths in the state, including 276 homicides and 322 suicides. Recent research has shown that limiting access to firearms among at-risk individuals can lead to a decrease in suicide rates.

The event will also feature a community blessing and remarks from local leaders. Previous buyback events have included participation from notable figures such as Baltimore Mayor Brandon M. Scott and Maryland Lt. Gov. Aruna Miller.

The archdiocese collaborates with Health by Southwest, a coalition of faith leaders and health providers dedicated to enhancing the well-being of residents in Southwest Baltimore. Partner organizations include Catholic Charities, Mount Saint Joseph High School, My Brother’s Keeper, Ascension Saint Agnes Hospital, and Our Lady of Victory Parish.
